Op-Ed in Yesterdays NY Times
Party Guy

By SARAH VOWELL
Published: September 6, 2008

FORMER Senator Fred Thompson, in his folksy and entertaining speech at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday night, described his party’s presidential nominee as such a rule-breaking scamp that for a minute there I thought he was nominating Tom Sawyer for president instead of John McCain. When Mr. Thompson described Senator McCain’s progression from Naval Academy cut-up to war hero, all I could think about was a ne’er-do-well West Point cadet bound for military distinction, Ulysses S. Grant.

In the 1868 presidential election, when the American people voted for Grant, the greatest war hero of the 19th century, they had no inkling they had just chosen one of our worst presidents, a largely clueless chief executive who allowed corruption to flourish in his administration and who offered pretty much zero leadership during the depression known as the Panic of 1873.

I am not merely pointing out that military fortitude does not necessarily lead to presidential wisdom — sometimes it does. The nation’s capital that the Republican Party loathes so much is named after one such gentleman. My point is way more obvious and disquieting. No matter how much we voters know about a candidate, the truth is we never can tell what kind of president he’ll be.

The rest of the op-ed piece is here.

Personally, my favorite line from the whole piece is the following:

Despite his consistent party-line voting record, some independents and Democrats still think of Senator McCain as the most palatable, independent-minded Republican. But this is the sort of empty compliment a friend of mine once compared to being called “the coolest Osmond.”

Mistress Mayfair: 44% off!
Be the ONLY person to own this beautiful corset!

Mistress Mayfair is a rare beauty indeed.
She is made of the finest Antique Victorian
Silk Brocade... The last yard of it's kind , in
fact. She is lined with black broadcloth, the
antique fabric is quite strong, but we still
backed it with heavy twill. There are 20 steel
bones, and a busk front closure. The
grommets in this one are a lovely antiqued
brass color, and the laces are flat black
which can be changed to a different color
ribbon to suit the needs of the owner.

Walk of Fame questions/comments

I had a great time at DC overall, i hit a few snags driving there but once I finally got there and settled in, things were good
I was just waondering what was up with the walk of fame this year? Is it me or did the celebs seem to be chraging a lot more? Also I think it was JCB's people that were charging $20.00 just to take a picture with them and $30.00 for the auto, is it me or does that seem excessive? When I was in there they had the ;east amount of people waiting to see them. Also I know before some did not pose for photos, but you could at least take pics, I saw many with no camera signs areound and they had someone watching to make sure you did not even take your camera out. What was that about? The BG guys were all great and were taking pictures with people, but many others would not. Just wondering what others think.

Many Thanks to Those at the Dark Fantasy Panels & DJ Dance!
Just want to thank those who attended the Dark Fantasy Track panels I was honoured to speak at, and to the wonderful crowd at the Steampunk and Machine Musick panels.

I especially want to thank the MANY people who attended the Dark Fantasy DJ Dance event Friday night of the con. With all the people, 2 music labels, members of three bands and representatives from a over a half-dozen states at the DJ event, I'd say the response was very positive indeed, haha!

It was a good way to encompass what's ideal about the new Dark Fantasy Track, which consists of a wider definition of what's in the shadows...even though the 'establishment' was left scratching their heads *LOL ^_^ A great balance to the other music events throughout the Con. Those who wanted to get some heavy dancing in seemed to have their quota more than filled!

All of you definitely shook the foundations that night, and the numerous questions and emails since that night have been very positive- so many new people now curious as to the new cutting edge Industrial music that is reshaping underground dance culture!

Hope to see many of you out on my tour this year & next. Add me here on LJ and keep in touch. I'd be glad to direct any of you to more music out there, be it Industrial, Steampunk, Gothic or otherwise. It's always amazing meeting many new friends thru music-

-end:-

"Like plates washed clean"
Happy birthday to [info]alii_s. May you have a wonderful day today and many more to come!

A few notes...

* For a limited time, HarperCollins is making Neil Gaiman's fantastic novel Neverwhere available online for free. I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you haven't read it, here's a perfect opportunity!

* Thanks to everyone who participated in my poll about October. My annual month-long, Halloween-inspired "spooky" blogfest will indeed be back this year, and I'm busy making plans, so I hope it will be lots of fun for everyone. I know I'm looking forward to it!

* Today we went to Charlotte and saw the "A Day in Pompeii" exhibit at Discovery Place. It was quite remarkable, especially the room-size frescoes, the funerary sculptures, and the plaster casts of the victims. Charlotte is the final U.S. destination for this exhibit, so if you're in the area and interested, be sure to see it.

"The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze."

2008 Parade Video
Posted to Dragon*ConTV today ... http://web.dragoncontv.com/videos/246/

This is almost the entire parade, with a few slow spots cut out in the interest of it not being too long. This is our first year recording & editing the parade the same day. In 2009 we should have it on the hotel TV sometime Saturday evening for all of the night owls to enjoy.

Have a curious question re: Friday and Saturday
Okay I know some of the people I had talked to said that Friday and Saturday, they felt EXTREMELY lethargic/drained, especially during the daylight hours.  Several friends had to take naps throughout the day just to remain cohesive.

I know people have said they didn't find the convention as hot as last year, but I found myself sweating more than I EVER have before, and seeing more people sweaty and looking, for  lack of a better term, dazed.

I'm curious to see if anyone else felt like that, and whether it lifted Sunday when the weather changed.

Also, I and my family were staying at the Sheraton, which while a NICE hotel, felt somewhat disconnected with the rest of the convention in general, was curious if anyone else staying at the Sheraton felt the same way.

I had a BLAST at D*C regardless, and oh you can BELIEVE I will be back next year!

Steampunk Essay
Well done to all the steampunk costumers that were at Dragon*Con this year! I got a lot of great pictures of you all and if you have my card, then just give me a week or so to get those edited and put online. What with all the steampunkers we had at D*C this year, I thought they might like to take a look at something I wrote a while back which I called the Electrodynamic Engineer's Primer. I am updating it this week to be a little more polished, a little more updated since I wrote it right before the big media explosion about steampunk. Feel free to go take a look and comment over there.

Systems Hunt III: The Winnowing Continues
Okay, this is another in my series of posts about seeking a game system for a particular campaign I'm going to run. I swear I'll finish narrowing this down eventually. The other posts are here: (12)

I've done some more work on this process, and have updated my list of systems that have been considered or discussed. Changes from last time are italicized. 7/18 are already out flatWherein I narrow out a few more systems and hit a wheel-shaped dillemma. )edit the second: I'm not looking to have more systems recommended to me at this point, I'm looking for feedback on the ones I'm presently considering. If there's a system that I simply must hear about and that isn't on the list above, feel free to tell me, but please make sure you say precisely why. Comments that just say I might want to look at system X are not especially helpful.
